    Description

    Welcome!
I'm offering for your consideration a fabulous very old Zuni pendant dating back to the 1940s or 1950s. It was made by master stone/silversmith Ted Edaakie, who began producing about 1930. Theodore Edaakie, called Ted Edaakie, had work in the C.G.Wallace catalog, the Museum of The American Indian Smithsonian Institution, The Museum of New Mexico and The Heard Museum in Arizona. Edaakie won several awards for his work. The C.G. Wallace catalog also reports the sale of two of his roadrunner pins. In the 1930's and 1940's Theodore Edaakie was employed as an artist at C. G. Wallace's Trading Post at Zuni.  Mosaic and channel inlay pieces that Theodore made were collected by Wallace and several were sold at the 1975 Sotheby's Auction of Wallace's collection. He was one of the famous Edaakie brothers. He was a superb lapidarist as well as silversmith and the stones on this pendant are superb. They look as if there were a thick enamel applied rather than the inlay of stones. Within this piece, there is use of a spotted cowrie shell in brown and white, which is a lovely use for the owl and jet which is also used for dot inlay in the eyes, coral and jet, and a beautiful turquoise. The shells and stones are all hand cut and buffed and have three dimensionality.  I'm always impressed by his use of color which I find to be brilliant and arresting. He had a great talent for color. The silver work is also special. There is his characteristic stamp work on flattened stamped wires that frame the owl and on raindrops. The stamp work is identifiably his and his alone. I have a matching bolo of his in my store right now and am going to be offering a matching pin too. This design is well known and accepted as being the work of Ted Edaakie.
This pendant is about 1-1/4" (3/18 cm) tall and wide and it weighs about 6 grams. The letter "E" is engraved on the back, but even if it had no hallmark it would be identifiably the work of Ted Edaakie. The condition is excellent vintage with minor wear due to its age. This is the same design he used for some dangles on some bolos but this is probably not one of those; those pieces tended to be smaller. I think this was probably always intended to be a pendant. Lovely!
Highly collectible! This was made by one of the all time great masters. It's beautiful! This could easily become a signature piece you could wear every day.  I would consider also buying the pin to wear with it and the bolo which could be interchanged with the pendant. These are all a little different in choice of stones but per as a set.

When I include pages from published books in my listings it is in accordance with Fair Use Law, which permits the use of source material for discussion, reference, education and criticism.
Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.
