    Description

    Welcome!
I'm offering for your consideration an extraordinary kachina belt buckle by the renowned Phillip Long, Navajo. Phillip Long was the renowned son of the amazing Helen Long and Jimmie Long. He is famous in his own right and you can see the strength and beauty in the silver work in this belt buckle. Long's favorite designs were kachina and yei figures and eagle dancers. One of Phillip's kachina figures is illustrated in one of the biographies books. He is also illustrated in numerous other books and his work resides in the collections of several museums, such as the Peabody and Harvard. This piece is a great example of his top quality workmanship, showing his detailed kachina figure with very fine elements, his leaves which are mirrored by the edging framing the outside of this buckle, his stamping around the buckle, his use of very finest quality natural turquoise, which is just gorgeous! I believe the turquoise is Lone Mountain mine but I can't be sure. It's incredibly stunning turquoise. The leaves remind me of holly with little berries underneath them and the matching look on the frame of the buckle is aesthetically just perfect. He was a great artist. and this piece is suitable for the best collections. The design is such that it could be worn daily, because the gorgeous stones and work are protected by being inset into a shadow box with the frame protecting all of it.
This buckle is fully hallmarked correctly with Phillip Long's hallmarks and not marked for silver content, which is typical of that time period. The buckle is 3" long and 2-1/4" tall. It has a swivel keeper, which is more comfortable than a static one, and it can hold a belt up to about 1-7/16" wide. It weighs about 58.7 grams. It is in excellent vintage and collectible condition.
It's rare to find Phillip Long's work, since he didn't work for very long, and it's all collected! This is a good opportunity for you to collect this superb example. This is the sort of piece for which he was most famous. Other publications illustrating Long's work are: American Indian Art magazine August 1996, North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment by Lois Dubin (2000) and Indian Jewelry on the Market by Peter Schiffer (1996). Phillip Long's hallmark is a joined PL beside a horizontal arc (sun rise, sun set) with rays.
Highly collectible! This was made by one of the all time great masters. This could easily become a signature piece you could wear every day. It has a great kachina, gorgeous rare turquoise stones, the leaves and detailing on the buckle, all top notch. It's a treasure, startlingly beautiful, and an early masterpiece.
