Description
A diminutive antique gilt bronze vase from the Art Nouveau period stamped with the PARIS Louchet Ciseleur foundry mark, made in France circa 1900.
The heavy, double-handled vessel is decorated with gilt blossoms, stems, and leaves in relief. The mottled brown body emulates the colors and patterns of tortoiseshell with a band of incised lines in a chevron pattern encircling the base. The vase bears the impressed circular mark 'PARIS Louchet Ciseleur' foundry mark under one handle. The vessel is of a substantial weight and in very good, original condition with an old patina and spots of verdigris, measuring 4 in. H x 4 in. W handle to handle.
Paul Louchet and his brother established a foundry in Paris, working with leading French artists and designers of the period including Majorelle, Lalique, Gallé, and Daum.
