    Description

    "NO RESERVE AUCTION"
    An old original Bronze Sculpture of John Ruskin's Hand done by Gutzon Borglum.  Gutzon is most well known for his Sculpture Monuments at Mt Rushmore and Stone Mountain but he also did smaller works in Bronze.  In 1897 Borglum was working in London and visited an aging John Ruskin at his residence with the organist H.S. Roberts.  While Ruskin and Roberts talked, Borglum studied Ruskin and made several sketches of him.  Years later he created a bronze of Ruskin with a book in his hand, seated in a block like chair, with a heavy lap robe over his legs.  This bronze looks very similar to the empty hand in the larger sculpture so maybe this was part of a test run or was made by Borglum for some other reason?  Also included is the old original Cartier box and piece of paper from a former owner.  John Ruskin 1819-1900 was an English writer, philosopher, and art critic of the Victorian era.
    This old original Bronze Hand measures about 1 1/2" inches wide by about 3 1/3 inches long and 1 1/2 inches tall and weighs about 271 grams and is heavy in weight.
