Description
A rare Art Deco Hagenauer "Diana with Dogs" Bronze Prototype. Estate sale find. The base and mounting nuts is the difference between this "one off" example and the final production pieces.
This has all the earmarks of being an experimental piece prior to production.
This sculpture exhibits both age and evidence of being repolished in the past. All known examples noted have been kept "brassy". The underside retains the age acquired patina. This is exactly like known "Diana with Dogs" examples but has a much thicker/heavier base being the only difference. The heigth and length and details of figures is spot on. The finalized known production pieces have thin streamlined bases to better fit the deco style and would lower production costs. There is specialty nuts on the production bases also, not the standard nuts as used on this prototype. The threaded post on Diana''s rear foot was placed too close to the edge to secure it with a nut.You can lift the threaded post from the hole, making this item imperfect (see photos), another reason to go with the thin flat base and specialty nuts.. There is a stamped old style number "2" on one side of both dog's hind feet. The base is unmarked, as would be expected on a workshop experimental piece. A length of nine chain links have been replaced closest to her leash hand.
Measures 8 1/4" tall with thick base and 16"" in length.
