Here is your chance to this fascinating, original 1899 yellow and blue ribbon for the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Lawrence Post 66 of Medford, Massachusetts. Also attached to the ribbon is a red, white and blue ribbon for the Neptune Club of Philadelphia. The GAR ribbon reads
Lawrence Post G.A.R. Medford, Mass. Sept. 1899
and measures 7 ¾” long, including the gold colored fringe, which is completely intact. The Neptune Club ribbon measures approximately 4 ¾”, including the gold colored tassel, which is also fully intact. It reads
    Neptune Club Of Phila.
. The back of the larger has the manufacturer’s label – J. W. Shaw Co. of Philadelphia, PA.
The Samuel C. Lawrence Post of Medford, MA was chartered in August, 1866. It was named after Samuel Crocker Lawrence (November 22, 1832 – September 24, 1911) a Massachusetts politician who served as the first Mayor of Medford, Massachusetts. During the American Civil War, he served as colonel of the 5th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. After the war he became a Veteran Companion of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. In 1869 he was elected captain of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. An active Freemason, Lawrence served as Most Worshipful Grand Master of Massachusetts from 1881-1883. In 1884 he was installed as a 33rd Degree Mason. He also served as a director of the Eastern, Maine Central and Boston and Maine railroads.
The Neptune Club of Philadelphia appears to have been an athletic club, as well as a social and political organization. It was chartered in the late 1860s or early 1870s. Members were actively involved in rowing competitions and, it appears, baseball.
    The ribbons are in
    very good condition
, though appear a bit worn and probably could use a bit of cleaning. A wonderful addition to any collection of GAR / Civil War or rowing / baseball sports related memorabilia and ephemera. Please note that I pride myself on the care taken to package and ship items I sell on eBay. A quick read of my Feedback will bear this out. When possible I also try to recycle shipping materials to not only be more sustainable, but also to keep shipping costs as low. Be assured I never compromise the quality of materials used in shipping just to save money.
